Non-Lucrative Visa Health Insurance in Spain

Applying for Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) means showing that you have suitable health insurance for your residence application. The policy must meet the requirements applied by the Spanish authorities and the consulate where you submit your application.

Insurance for Expats helps NLV applicants arrange private health insurance in Spain through DKV, with policy documentation and certificates prepared for the visa process. Acceptance is subject to insurer underwriting and the requirements of the relevant Spanish authority.

Non-Lucrative Visa health insurance requirements

Official Spanish consular guidance requires public or private health insurance contracted with an insurer authorised to operate in Spain and covering the risks insured by Spain’s public health system. Several Spanish consulates specify that the policy should have no deductible, no co-payment, no waiting period and no coverage limit, and that ordinary travel insurance is not a substitute for qualifying health insurance.

Requirements can vary slightly by consular post, so applicants should always check the current checklist for the place where they apply. You can review the official Spanish consular guidance for the Non-Lucrative Visa.

DKV health insurance for Non-Lucrative Visa applicants

Our visa-focused DKV health insurance option is designed for foreigners moving to Spain and can be used for Non-Lucrative Visa applications when the policy matches the requirements of the relevant consulate. It provides private healthcare access in Spain without co-payments and without waiting periods for covered services, subject to the policy terms and medical underwriting.

The contract is annual. Applicants can use a passport during the application process, and the policy documentation identifies the insured person, policy and effective date. Basic dental cover is included with the health product. Repatriation is not part of the health policy and, when desired or required for a separate purpose, can be arranged separately.

When should I arrange the insurance?

Do not leave the insurance until the day before your visa appointment. The insurer needs time to process the application, review any health declaration when applicable, issue the policy and prepare the certificate used for the NLV file.

For the visa product we arrange, the policy effective date can generally be scheduled up to 90 days in advance. That makes it possible to coordinate the start date with your planned move and visa timetable. We recommend allowing several business days for documentation and additional time if medical underwriting is required.

If your appointment is approaching, send us the planned visa appointment date, intended arrival date in Spain, date of birth for each applicant and passport details so we can review the timing before you purchase.

What happens if the Non-Lucrative Visa is denied?

Visa applicants understandably worry about paying for annual health insurance before knowing whether the visa will be approved. For the visa insurance product we arrange, a visa denial before the policy effective date can qualify for a full refund, subject to the insurer’s terms and the required evidence of denial.

If the policy has already started, the treatment is different: the refund is generally calculated for the unused portion of the annual period rather than for time already covered. We will explain the applicable process before you buy so you know how the effective date affects a possible refund.

Does NLV insurance need repatriation or travel cover?

Health insurance and repatriation insurance are different products. Spanish consular guidance focuses on qualifying medical insurance in Spain; for example, the Spanish Consulate in Montreal states that the NLV health policy does not need to include repatriation or evacuation. Always check your own consular post because document checklists can differ.

The DKV health policy also includes emergency medical assistance abroad of up to €12,000 for trips of up to 90 consecutive days. This travel assistance is a benefit of the health policy, but it should not be confused with a separate repatriation policy or with travel insurance used as a substitute for NLV health insurance.

See the Spanish Consulate’s NLV insurance guidance for an example of the distinction.
